SAN FRANCISCO – The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) today announced the launch of a new proceeding aimed at further reducing the state’s reliance on natural gas, a critical step in supporting California’s clean energy goals. This initiative will prioritize equity, safety, and affordability while addressing challenges such as reliability risks and commodity price fluctuations.
The newly established Rulemaking recognizes the importance of comprehensive long-term planning, which will incorporate essential data and analytical frameworks. By evaluating the evolving landscape of the natural gas sector, the CPUC aims to guide the transition toward a sustainable and affordable energy future. This effort not only focuses on long-term strategies but also seeks immediate actions to promote decarbonization and manage potential risks.
Key Objectives of the Proceeding:
- Long-Term Planning: Develop and implement methodologies for natural gas transition planning that will help inform operational strategies. This includes scenario analyses, assessments of potential rate impacts, and exploration of ratemaking options to ensure affordability and mitigate risks during the transition.
- Interim Actions: Identify and act on measures that can lower costs for the system and ratepayers while advancing decarbonization efforts in the nearer term, while long-term planning work is underway. This includes both targeted actions and policy development to address natural gas transition issues across other CPUC proceedings.
