Six Flags Magic Mountain officially begins construction on massive solar carport project

Six Flags Magic Mountain in Los Angeles has officially broke ground on a 12.37-MW solar carport and energy storage system. The project, installed by Solar Optimum and developed by DSD Renewables, is likely the largest single-site commercial energy project in California.

“We’re thrilled to be breaking ground on this monumental project and taking the next step towards a cleaner, greener future,” said Six Flags Magic Mountain Interim Park President Jeff Harris. “We’re continuing to make advancements toward improving and protecting the environment, and are honored to be industry leaders, paving the way for other theme park companies around the world.”

The 637,000-ft2 solar carport is being built over the main guest parking lot and team member parking lot. The system should offset 100% of the park’s energy usage. Approximately 30 EV charging spaces will be included in the guest parking lot, and a 2-MW, 16-MWh energy storage system will be on-site too.

The Six Flags Magic Mountain project is the third solar installation for Six Flags. Properties in Northern California at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and New Jersey at Six Flags Great Adventure have also developed on-site solar capabilities with over 30 MW of fully operational solar power systems installed. These three sites will eventually support 42.37 MW of solar.
